Why Semen Analysis is Important

A vasectomy is not effective immediately. After your procedure, active sperm remain stored in your system above the blocked tubes. It takes time and regular ejaculations to clear this remaining sperm out of your body.
The semen analysis is a vital post-procedure test to verify that your semen is completely free of sperm. You must continue to use alternative forms of birth control until we review your results and officially confirm that you are sterile.
Most patients complete this test approximately twelve weeks after their procedure, or after at least twenty ejaculations. This waiting period allows enough time for the remaining sperm to clear from your reproductive tract.

Instructions for Using Your Take-Home Kit

After your procedure, US patients can order a Post Vasectomy Semen Analysis (PVSA) home testing kit from PVSA.org. The kit costs $50 and is purchased separately from the vasectomy procedure. To help ensure accurate results:

  • Wait until 12 weeks after your procedure or after at least 20 ejaculations before completing your test.
  • Do not ejaculate for 7 days before collecting your sample.
  • Follow the collection, packaging, and mailing instructions provided with your PVSA kit.

After your results are ready, Dr. Shan will discuss them with you and inform you when it is appropriate to discontinue using other methods of birth control

Note: Ontario patients follow a different process. Semen testing is covered by OHIP, and samples should be submitted through LifeLabs.

Your Privacy and Convenience Come First

We understand that collecting a semen sample can feel awkward. That is why we prioritize your comfort. By ordering the kit from PVSA.org, you can have a private and stress-free testing process.
Instead of requiring you to produce a sample in a clinical office, Dr. Shan prefers a discreet at-home collection kit. You can collect your sample in the comfort and privacy of your own home, on your own schedule.
For your convenience, you do not need to drive all the way back to our main office to deliver it if you’re in the US. You can simply drop your sample off in the mail. If you’re in Ontario, Canada, OHIP covers lab testing, and lab samples can be submitted to any local LifeLabs.

Semen Analysis FAQs

Our US patients can order the semen analysis kit for $50 from PVSA.org, and the follow-up clinical review is entirely included in the $600 flat fee. The semen analysis kit and the subsequent clinical review are completely funded by OHIP for our patients in Ontario.

Most patients complete their semen analysis 12 weeks after their vasectomy or after at least 20 ejaculations. Continue using another form of birth control until Dr. Shan reviews your results and confirms that the procedure was successful.

If sperm is still present, do not worry. This simply means your body needs more time to clear. We will ask you to wait a few more weeks, continue ejaculating regularly, and submit a second sample later.

No. US patients collect their sample at home using the PVSA kit ordered online after the procedure. Ontario patients should follow the collection instructions provided by LifeLabs.

You must continue using alternative birth control until our clinical team reviews your laboratory results and explicitly tells you that it is safe to stop. Assuming you are clear without a verified lab test can lead to an unplanned pregnancy.
