What You Need to Know About Vasectomies

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that permanently prevents pregnancy by blocking the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm. The whole procedure takes around 15 minutes in-office, under local anesthesia, with no hospital stay and no general anesthesia required.

Traditional vasectomies involved a scalpel incision, stitches, and a longer recovery. The modern no-scalpel approach replaces all of that with a single small puncture, no sutures, and minimal bleeding. It’s a clinically validated advancement that has been shown to reduce complications and get men back to their normal routine faster than the older technique ever did.

The Three-Step Vasectomy Procedure

Every gentle vasectomy involves three main stages: applying the anesthetic,
accessing the tubes, and securely blocking them.

Anesthesia

Traditional procedures use a needle to inject local anesthetic. Dr. Shan uses a state-of-the-art jet spray applicator. This technology delivers a quick, high-pressure mist of numbing medicine through the skin, completely eliminating the need for needles.

Accessing the Tubes

Traditional surgery uses a scalpel to make one or two incisions in the scrotum. With the no-scalpel technique, Dr. Shan uses a specialized instrument to make a single, tiny puncture in the center. This allows easy access to the vas deferens tubes. Because the puncture is so incredibly small, it closes on its own without requiring any stitches.

Blocking the Tubes

Once reached, each tube is divided. Dr. Shan applies triple protection by cauterizing the inside of the tubes, dividing them, and placing a small medical clip. This highly secure method ensures the sperm cannot travel through the blocked pathway.

How Do You Prepare for Your Vasectomy Appointment?

Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or any blood-thinning medications for seven days prior to your procedure, as these can heighten your chances of bleeding or bruising.

Carefully shave the entire scrotum and the base of your penis the night before your scheduled appointment to ensure a clean area.

Shower thoroughly with soap on the morning of your procedure. This simple step helps keep the skin clean and reduces any risk of infection.

Bring clean, snug underwear or a supportive athletic jockstrap to wear immediately after your procedure is complete.

Most patients can drive themselves home safely after the procedure since we only use a local spray anesthetic. However, we highly recommend arranging a driver if you feel particularly anxious or think you might feel lightheaded afterward.

What Happens During Your

The Preparation

Once you lie down, Dr. Shan will perform a brief physical exam to locate the vas deferens tubes. Next, she will use the gentle, needle-free jet injector to apply the local anesthetic. This spray numbs the area almost instantly, so you will not feel any pain. Then the skin will be prepped with an antiseptic solution.

The Procedure

Using the specialized no-scalpel instrument, Dr. Shan makes a tiny puncture to reach the tubes. She will then divide and seal each tube using the highly secure triple-protection method. After checking the area, she will place a small piece of sterile gauze over the puncture. The entire process takes 15 minutes and requires no stitches.

Your Post-Procedure Care

Keep the initial gauze pad in place for several hours to keep the area clean.

Wear your supportive, snug underwear or a jockstrap continuously for the first few days. Rest on the couch or a bed for the remainder of the day. You can also use a cloth-wrapped ice pack for fifteen minutes at a time to help decrease any mild swelling.

The next day, you can take a shower and start to take walks. You should take the gauze pad off in the shower and replace it with a new sterile gauze pad when you are dry. Continuing to wear the athletic supporter over the gauze is helpful for most men.

You can take a warm shower the following morning, but do not soak in a tub or swim for a full week. Most men can comfortably return to light desk work within two to three days. However, you must avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sports for seven days to allow the puncture site to heal safely and to prevent any swelling.

The Only Thing That Changes is the Pregnancy Risk

You can safely resume sexual activity after seven days if you feel comfortable doing so. Our clinic provides detailed follow-up care instructions that explain how to monitor your healing and when to complete your post-procedure safety checks.

While a vasectomy is nearly ninety-nine percent effective, it is not active immediately. Sperm remains in your system for several weeks. You must use alternative birth control until you submit a semen sample that shows a completely clear count. This vital follow-up test is usually scheduled after 12 weeks or twenty ejaculations.

While a reversal is technically possible through surgery, it is a complex, expensive procedure that is not always successful. You should consider this a permanent form of birth control before scheduling.

No. A vasectomy only prevents pregnancy by blocking sperm. It does not offer any protection against sexually transmitted infections. You should continue to use barrier methods like condoms for STI protection.

You can resume light walking the day after your procedure. However, you must avoid heavy weightlifting, running, cycling, and strenuous sports for at least seven days to prevent any swelling or bleeding.

Not at all. Testosterone is generated in the testes and directly enters the bloodstream. The vas deferens has nothing to do with it. Your hormone levels, energy, and sex drive remain completely unaffected by the procedure.

A no-scalpel vasectomy is very safe. Minor risks include mild bruising, temporary swelling, or slight discomfort. Severe complications such as infection or bleeding are uncommon, happening in fewer than two percent of instances.
